"When I was 16 years old, I met the love of my life, Charles Edward Long. He was a tall, long drink of water." (My Story - A Memoir of Mildred Lucille Scott Long) The story of them meeting is almost ridiculous and kind of funny, but I always thought it was very sweet and touching.
The story of them meeting was that on a nice summer day, my grandmother and her best friend Jane were taking a walk around town in Uhrichsville, OH in 1944. My grandfather happened to be walking on the same street with one of his friends, and they ended up running into each other.
My grandfather ended up asking my grandmother what her name was. She said, "Mildred".
In reply, he said, "Mildred, I'm going to marry you."
Well, you can see how that panned out because I wouldn't be sitting here writing this blogpost. And, funny enough, her best friend Jane married my grandfather's brother. My grandmother expressed that they were like sisters because of how close they were in her memoir. They ended up actually being sisters (in a way).
I guess what this story means to me is that love can be found at any place or time, no matter what. I always thought this was a cute story and I will try my best to preserve it as much as I can. This affected my life because I honestly probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for this moment in her lifetime. I'm thankful my family has shared this memory with me because so many good memories are pushed aside to make room for bad ones.
As human-beings, we need those good memories to keep us going and motivate us to have fun and enjoy life for what it is.
What a beautiful story. Love at first sight. Great story to tell your kid some day.
