Dennison Depot Museum
Dennison Depot Museum |
The Dennison Depot Museum is in the small town of Dennison
in Tuscarawas county Ohio. It honors the many men and women who have passed
through the town via railway, whether they worked for the railroad or maybe
happened to be traveling to New York. Dennison Ohio is very well known for
their part in the railroad industry. The Dennison Depot was originally built in
1873. Thousands upon thousands of men and women have passed through Dennison
just by stopping at the Depot. In fact, the Dennison Depot was one of the
locations for a WWI Red Cross Canteen. It is widely known for its role in WWII
though. The Dennison Depot was a main stop for soldiers being sent overseas or
out west for training. The friendly faces they would see, handing them a sandwich
or an ice cream, were locals. How awesome is that? In fact, my great
Grandmother was one of these friendly faces working the Canteen. Clearly, this
place has such beautiful history. The Depot fell into shambles when the
railroad industry slowed down. It really became a forgotten treasure. In 1984,
the Depot was bought by the Village of Dennison from Conrail. The city restored
the Depot to its’ original beauty. It
reopened in 1989. From then on, many hard workers have helped to preserve stories,
souvenirs, pictures, and even videos, and have turned the Depot into a
beautiful museum.
