NEW PHILADELPHIA
New Philadelphia, Ohio. A small city that represents local tradition, urban culture, agriculture, industry, and academia.
With just over 17,000 people New Philadelphia is not, by any means, a big city.
Located in Tuscarawas County in eastern Ohio, New Philadelphia is in a unique position. By region the city is agrarian. By practice the city is academic. Like most places in Appalachian Ohio, New Phili maintains an agricultural economy and culture. Unlike most places in the region New Phili is home to an active branch of learning and academics, kent State Tuscarawas.
Getting closer to town square you will find the culture is more traditional. With locally owned restaurants and a coffee shop, the New Philadelphia city center represents the people that live there.
Move towards the outskirts of the city and you will find more nationally familiar places. Places like starbucks, Wendy’s, even Walmart.
New Philadelphia excels at representing both sides of the coin when it comes to Ohio culture. If you are from Appalachian Ohio you can feel a sense of home in the still developing and agrarian community. On the other hand, someone from outside of the region can find a home away from home in one of the many familiar chains or institutions that have set up shop here in New Phili.
While often overlooked or even unheard of, New Philadelphia has a place and a sense of home for everyone.
